The Health Surveillance System is a highly flexible, unique web-based GIS system that provides Health officials with the ability to collect information from various sources and assess it with the help of interactive maps. Interactive mapping provides users with an understanding of diagnosed symptoms for communicable disease and actual reported incidents. Officials can use the system to capture essential information from critical institutions such as hospitals and schools. Integrated with the State or County GIS, Bio-Surveillance maps all syndromes or actual reported cases and tracks the path of communicable diseases cases. Bar and line graphs assist decision makers in understanding trends and other key relationships. Various types of spatial reports can be generated and broadcast on an automatic schedule by various means such as e-mail and fax. The system can also be used by authorities to report and track the progress of active bio-terrorism threats which are closely tied to specific symptoms that may appear in the population.
